Techniques

Anal Fisting

The insertion of a hand into the rectum and lower colon. The most common form of fisting in the gay community. Typically begins with finger play and progresses gradually using thick fisting lubricant and nitrile gloves. Requires patience, communication, and preparation. See the beginner’s guide to anal fisting.

Handballing

Another term for anal fisting, commonly used in the US and older UK community literature. The term was common in leather bars and clubs from the 1970s onwards. Handballing and anal fisting refer to the same activity.

Depth Play

Fisting that progresses beyond the rectum into the sigmoid colon. Requires significantly more experience, preparation and communication than standard fisting. Not a beginner activity. See the fisting safety guide before attempting depth play.

Double Fisting

The insertion of both hands simultaneously. An advanced technique requiring extensive experience and preparation. Not recommended for beginners or intermediate players. Communication and aftercare are especially important.

Elbow Dipping

Depth play that reaches as far as the elbow. Rare, requires an exceptionally experienced bottom, extensive warm-up, and significant trust between partners.

Punching

A rhythmic in-and-out technique where the fisted hand moves with some velocity. Only appropriate once the bottom is fully warmed up and comfortable. The term is often misunderstood — it does not mean striking. Communication about pace is essential.

Wrist Popping

Passing the widest part of the hand through the anal sphincter — the moment of initial full insertion. The hand passes the knuckles into the rectum. Requires the bottom to bear down and relax simultaneously.

Warm-Up

The gradual process of preparing the anal canal for fisting, beginning with fingers and progressively increasing insertion. Skipping warm-up is the most common cause of injury. The anal sphincter needs time to relax. A proper warm-up is non-negotiable.

Lube and Preparation

Fisting Lube

Lubricant specifically formulated for anal fisting — thicker and longer-lasting than standard personal lubricant. Fisting requires significantly more lube than standard anal play. See the guide to the best fisting lube UK and shop fisting lubricants.

J-Lube

A powdered obstetric lubricant (originally for veterinary use) that became widely used in the gay fisting community. Mixed with water to create a slippery, long-lasting lubricant. Oil-free so safe with nitrile gloves. Messy to use — many players now prefer purpose-made fisting lubes.

Crisco

Vegetable shortening — historically the original fisting lubricant used in the 1970s leather community. Oil-based: not compatible with latex gloves and not suitable for use with sex toys. Largely replaced by modern water-based fisting lubes.

Water-Based Fisting Lube

Lubricant with a water base — safe with all glove materials including nitrile and latex, safe with toys, easy to clean up. The recommended lube type for fisting. Fisting Butter Original is a thick water-based lubricant developed specifically for anal fisting.

Douching

Anal cleansing performed before receptive anal play. For fisting, thorough preparation matters for hygiene and comfort. A bulb douche or shower shot is typically used. Over-douching can irritate the bowel — see the preparation guide.

Shower Shot

An attachment connecting to a standard shower hose, allowing water to be directed internally for anal douching. More thorough than a bulb douche for pre-fisting preparation. Shop the shower shot douche kit.

Bulb Douche

A handheld squeeze bulb for anal douching. Portable and suitable for lighter preparation. The 330ml bulb douche is a practical starting point.

Gear and Equipment

Nitrile Gloves

Latex-free examination gloves — the standard hand covering for anal fisting. Nitrile is preferred over latex because it is stronger, resistant to oils, and suitable for people with latex allergies. Nitrile fisting gloves are available in boxes of 100. Extended-cuff nitrile gloves provide forearm coverage for deeper play.

Extended Cuff Gloves

Nitrile gloves with a longer cuff extending partway up the forearm. Essential for depth play where insertion goes beyond the wrist. Standard examination gloves only cover the hand and wrist.

Sling

A hammock-like suspension device used during fisting, suspended from a ceiling mount or frame. Positions the bottom at the correct height and angle for extended sessions. Standard equipment in play spaces and private dungeons. Allows both partners to maintain comfortable positions for long sessions.

Play Gear Bag

A bag for storing and transporting fisting kit — lube, gloves, douche equipment, aftercare products. A discreet play gear bag looks like a gym bag externally while being lined and compartmentalised inside.

Poppers (Amyl Nitrite)

Alkyl nitrite inhalants commonly used in the gay community. Cause brief smooth muscle relaxation which some players find aids insertion. Legal to buy in the UK. Not required for fisting and not suitable for everyone. Should not be used with erectile dysfunction medication or certain heart conditions.

Aftercare

Aftercare

Physical and emotional care following a fisting session. Physical aftercare includes cleaning, applying soothing products, hydrating, and resting. Emotional aftercare addresses the psychological aspects of intense play. See the full fisting aftercare guide and shop aftercare products.

Sub Drop

A physical and emotional low experienced after intense play, caused by the drop in adrenaline and endorphins after a high-intensity session. Symptoms include emotional vulnerability, fatigue, low mood, and physical sensitivity. Can occur hours or days after a session. Addressed in the aftercare guide.

Top Drop

The equivalent of sub drop experienced by the active partner — the fister. Less discussed but equally real. The top may experience guilt, emotional flatness, or anxiety after an intense session. Aftercare applies to both partners.

Aftercare Balm

A soothing, moisturising product applied externally to the anal area after fisting to relieve tenderness and aid skin recovery. Fragrance-free formulations are recommended. The Fisting Butter Aftercare Soothing Balm is specifically formulated for post-fisting recovery.

Community and Roles

Top (Fisting)

The active partner in a fisting session — the person inserting their hand. Also called the fister. Being a fisting top is a specific skill set requiring patience, communication, and technique. Not the same as being a sexual top in general.

Bottom (Fisting)

The receptive partner — the person being fisted. Also called the fistee. Receiving requires significant physical preparation, relaxation, and trust. Experienced fisting bottoms often actively direct the session.

Versatile

A player who comfortably takes both the top and bottom role in fisting. Common in the fisting community where the demands of both roles are well understood.

Fist Pig

A term of affection within the fisting community for someone deeply enthusiastic about fisting. Self-applied rather than used by outsiders. Comparable to “pig” in broader leather and kink community usage.

Play Party

An organised private or semi-private gathering specifically for sexual play. Fisting play parties are common in major UK cities. See the events calendar and community for UK events.

Bears

A gay male subculture characterised by larger body types and typically masculine presentation. Bears have significant overlap with the leather and fisting scene. See the Bears group in the Fisting Butter community.

Leather Community

The gay leather subculture, originating in post-WWII motorcycle culture. The leather community has historically had strong ties to the fisting scene. See the leather vs rubber comparison.

Scene

Either the broader BDSM and kink community (“the scene”) or a specific agreed play session (“a scene”). Context determines meaning.

Safety and Harm Reduction

Safe Word

A pre-agreed word or signal used to pause or stop play immediately. Essential in fisting where non-verbal communication can be ambiguous. Common systems include the traffic light — red means stop, yellow means slow down, green means continue. Establishing a safe word before any session is non-negotiable.

Consent

Informed, ongoing, enthusiastic agreement to participate in an activity. In fisting, consent includes agreeing to specific acts, depth, technique, and retaining the ability to withdraw consent at any point. The foundation of everything. See community standards.

Harm Reduction

An approach that acknowledges people engage in higher-risk activities and focuses on minimising harm rather than abstinence. In fisting: use appropriate lube, wear gloves, prepare properly, avoid play when unwell, know the signs of injury. See the fisting safety guide.

Chemsex

Sexual activity involving specific drugs — most commonly mephedrone, GHB/GBL, and crystal meth. Prevalent in parts of the gay community. Associated with significant risks including addiction and increased STI transmission. Support is available through 56 Dean Street and the Terrence Higgins Trust.

PrEP

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis — a daily medication taken by HIV-negative people to prevent HIV transmission. Available free on the NHS in England, Scotland and Wales. Highly effective when taken correctly. Standard in the UK gay fisting community.

PEP

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis — antiretroviral medication taken after potential HIV exposure to prevent infection. Must be started within 72 hours. Available from sexual health clinics and A&E departments. Free on the NHS.
